Using portraiture, a dialogue is created between the viewer and the sitter; the image presented explores the idea of introspection. The sitter, demonstrates hyperawareness of a viewer’s gaze. Preluding the photograph was a period of contemplation culminating in a surrendering to the idea of representing oneself to a potential audience.
The formal, classic aesthetic is used to create a minimalistic stage for the photograph to take place. The subject responds to the camera and the camera is in place of the viewer’s alternate and ultimately unknown point of view.
The sitter has control over both the camera and themselves, but is helpless to the scrutiny of the presence of an invisible gaze.
